Long before social media, graffiti writers understood something many influencers still miss today:

Visibility is not the same thing as reputation.

Anyone can be seen.

Not everyone becomes remembered.

In graffiti culture, writers like Skeme weren’t building logos—they were building mythology. Every tag, every location, every appearance contributed to a larger narrative about who they were and what they represented.

The Five Laws of Skeme Branding

1. Your Name Must Travel Further Than You Do

In the 1980s, a graffiti writer’s influence was measured by how often their name appeared in unexpected places.

In 2026:

• Podcasts

• AI search results

• TikTok clips

• Newsletters

• Guest appearances

• Collaborations

The goal isn’t constant posting.

The goal is making your ideas appear where people aren’t expecting them.

2. Consistency Creates Mythology

A single tag means nothing.

A thousand tags create a legend.

Personal brands work the same way.

People trust repeated signals.

If your audience sees:

• weirdcore art

• digital nostalgia

• fairycore aesthetics

• retro internet magic

over and over again, eventually they stop asking:

“Who are you?”

and start saying:

“That’s unmistakably them.”

3. Presence Beats Perfection

Graffiti culture rewards participation.

The perfect piece hidden in a sketchbook has less cultural impact than a good piece seen by thousands.

For creators in 2026:

Finished > Perfect

Published > Planned

Seen > Polished

4. Territory Is Mental, Not Physical

Graffiti writers claimed physical space.

Modern creators claim conceptual space.

Examples:

• “The Windows 95 Fairycore Person”

• “The Vaporwave Egypt Historian”

• “The Cosmic Tea Frog Philosopher”

  

The strongest personal brands own a unique combination of ideas rather than a niche.

5. Community Is the Real Canvas

The greatest writers weren’t isolated artists.

They existed within crews, rivalries, scenes, and cultural conversations.

Likewise, personal brands today are built through:

• collaborations

• interviews

• community projects

• shared worlds

• audience participation

  

A brand grows faster when other people help tell the story.

Skeme’s philosophy teaches that personal branding is not the act of promoting yourself; it is the act of creating enough meaningful, consistent cultural signals that people begin telling your story for you.

That’s a very different approach from influencer culture.

It treats branding less like advertising and more like folklore.

And in an AI-saturated 2026, folklore may be far more valuable than visibility. Brands built on personality, mythology, and recognizable identity are harder to replicate than brands built only on content volume. Branding is ultimately the reputation and feeling people associate with you, not merely your visuals or posts.

Have you ever gone to someone’s newsletter homepage but couldn’t find an easy direct link to their substack profile page? You aren’t alone.

There is no direct link, unless you decide to go to their About page, which by default has the People section containing the profile link way at the bottom.

And I don’t want to click the back button. I want a link.

After a few times finding myself typing substack dot com @username to view people’s profile pages I realized I needed to add a profile text link to my menu. The profile pic doesn’t take you to the actual profile page.

Why not fix this for your users so they can not only go to your main profile - which has your Notes, links to your other publications, etc - with ease?

Also, it will create more traffic by way of page views to your side of the internet for all you number crunchers.

So let’s do this. For this example, I am using my main newsletter publication Magick Mica TV.

👉 Design Objective:

Add a link to your profile page on your top navigational bar.

The top left profile pic, the Home link, and the Top Link with your newsletter text/logo all take you to the same place. Your home page’s newsletter, and none to the profile page as expected.

I have since updated my navigational menu bar with a graphic logo as you can see above. Oddly enough, substack has 3 links for the newsletter homepage, but none for the profile.

One would assume your profile icon would take you to the profile page but it doesn’t. Confused?

The Home link on the newsletter already links back to the newsletter’s home page.

Your publication logo is different from the profile pic.

So I created the Profile link to bypass this problem. Anyone can click this link without frustration and end up on the substack user’s profile page fast.

See how one of the links says Profile? Well I created a link to my profile page which is substack.com/@magickmica

🪄✨ HOW:

Go to:

Settings - Appearance - Website

→ Navigational Bar Links —————→ Add Item

You will enter a Title and the Link to your profile.

In the title space, Type Profile. You can add emojis as well if you want extra style.

Then type the link to you profile - which is substack.com/@ YOUR USERNAME

Here’s mine.

You will place your OWN handle name after the @ symbol - obviously!

Now after this happens, it will automatically create a link in your menu bar found at the top of your newsletter.

You can also add other links to any page you want.

If you have a personal website or a store, add your link.

Just add another link with a new title and its web address and you are good to go!
